Cameron McWhirter of Decatur, whose new book Red Summer describes the life of black Americans after World War I, will speak at Piedmont College Thursday, Nov. 17.
The talk, followed by a book-signing session, is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the screening room of the Swanson Center for Performing Arts and Communications at the campus in Demorest.
Red Summer is a historical narrative that describes the life of black Americans after 1918, a period marked by waves of anti-black riots and lynchings.
McWhirter is currently a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal and has worked for several other news organizations including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Detroit News. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history, summa cum laude, from Hamilton College. He was awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for research in Eritrea and the Sudan and a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, where he created Red Summer.
